Someone once said “Buying a Nikon doesn’t make you a photographer, It makes you a Nikon owner”. How true that is. I started taking pictures with a Minolta X75 film camera about 10 years ago, and about 2 years later put it down to focus on other things, and, if I’m honest, because I realized that it takes study and discipline that, at the time, I wasn’t able to commit to. When I moved to Melbourne in 2008 I bought a Nikon point and shoot, and I was hooked again. Not quite an obsession, but pretty close. Now I use a Nikon D700, a terrific camera with a full 35mm frame. As Cartier Bresson observed, the ‘decisive moment’ is elusive. And, as John Burkowski observed, “I have a very good memory, but it’s short. Thank god for photography”.

To ensure my experiences stayed with me when sometimes I forget what I had for breakfast, it was time to really study photography and optical theory. Avoiding cliche and predictability is important to me, so I take the ‘money shot’ right away and then try to find something more interesting to say. Doesn’t always work, but it does give me exercise. I hope you like these collections, and if you find something you like, drop me a line and let me know. And if you can’t find anything you like, Ken Duncan or Steve Parrish will show you what the possibilities are, check out their sites.
